My brother Sohum and I are only two years apart so when he joined me at college at UVA it felt natural and like we were both just in the next phase of life. From growing up asking if we’re twins or if he’s older than I am, to his maturity as well, I’ve always felt really close in age to him along with being just close in general!
However, I have a ton of friends who have much younger siblings that I’ve watched grow up from a really young age. From watching them waddle around in diapers, to playing in homemade forts, to running around our cul de sacs every evening in the summer, it’s surreal watching these kiddos start senior year, wear their graduation cap and gowns and travel across the state and even COUNTRY to go to college!! That’s when all the FEELS start to hit!!
I’ve known Namrata since I was probably 4 or 5 years old! I grew up playing with her, her older sister Krittika, my brother, my best friend Sachi and her younger Dhruv in everyone’s backyards. Thinking back, I don’t really know how one adult handled the whole lot of us! They were some of my first friends when my family moved to Virginia so many years ago. Over the years I’ve seen her grow from the youngest and somewhat quietest of the group, to the most beautiful, HILARIOUS yet laid back and calming presence. Also, if you can’t tell from the pictures, this girl has got the BEST sense of style!! I’m so glad she let me take her senior year pictures!!
The session was a whirlwind with a thunder cloud coming out of nowhere and almost losing Krittika’s phone and then at one point, Krittika herself, without a phone! But through the whole session Namrata was so laid back and trusting! She was worried about looking natural in front of the camera but I took pictures of her for TWO minutes and she was perfect, a total NATURAL in front of the camera!! We got the most amazing glow right at the beginning of her session! And although I loved taking her pictures, my favorite part was getting dinner with Namratta and Krittika afterwards! I suggested we go to one of my favorite restaurants in Georgetown, Pizza Paradiso, and they treated me to it before I even realized!! This was already on TOP of the caramel latte they had gotten me from Baked & Wired (if you think they know the way to my heart, well they really do!). Thank you guys SOO much!! So despite the running around Georgetown (with Namrata in admirable booties), it was such a perfect summer evening and I wish I could do it over and over again 🙂

I’ve known Sachi since before we could even walk really, there’s pictures of us in those cute little party hats at our second birthday party. She’s been my best friend growing up and we’ve gone through almost everything together. I’m talking elementary school, those awkward middle school years, hundreds of dance performances together, choreographing and dancing for our high school dance company, surviving the IB program at South Lakes and then four years (well five for her because she did a co-op at Altec!) of the engineering life at VT and UVA. She’s been there for me through literally everything. We’ve watched each other grow and always been the ones to keep each other in check and be honest with each other.
I remember four years ago when she called me up when we were both starting out in college and she told me that she had met a boy. Our friend had dragged her to go get icecream and they had tagged along with two guys. Well one of those guys was Kunal and I could tell from the first few minutes of talking to me about him, that this was someone that was a keeper. He was sweet, funny, calm, and down to earth. A basketball fanatic and “mathlete.” They started dating within the first few weeks of college and Drillfield dates eventually turned into a strong four year relationship. They’ve been through semesters together at VT to semesters being apart handling grueling co-op schedules and only strengthened their relationship through their experiences. They are two people that you can simply count on to make it work and have been my role models for what a great relationship in college looks like. They are so supportive of each other but also very honest with each other always, always work through their differences.
I’ve been meaning to take their pictures together for ages but there were so many summers that we were in different places. But this summer, they were both in Northern Virginia and I needed a couple to dress up all fancy for a shoot. I asked Sachi and she said they could make it work within the next couple of days. We metroed in to D.C. and right before they went to a J. Cole concert in D.C we went over to the Kennedy Center to take pictures. I have been dying to take pictures at the Kennedy Center for years, so this in of itself made my heart so happy. But this shoot ended up being one of my favorite shoots to date!!! I mean you can’t go wrong taking pictures of your best friend and her boyfriend when they looked like models straight out of a magazine! And for people that don’t exactly enjoy “posing” in front of the camera, they were AMAZING!! We got through everything so quickly and effortlessly, you guys seemed like naturals 🙂 Thank you guys sooo much for helping me out and letting me take your pictures!!! Here’s some of my favorites from the shoot!
Favorite! ^^^ They have the dance dip down to a T! Thank you for modeling for me for this shoot and I can’t wait for all the pictures of you guys I hope to take in the future 🙂
