After months of planning out her senior session and having to reschedule due to, you guessed it, D.C. thunderstorms, we finally got to do Tanvi’s senior session! She had mentioned to me when she first emailed me that she wished she had gotten more pictures in her prom dress and so I knew she was going to bring it as an outfit but I did not expect it to be as stunning as it was!! I gave her a BIG hug and immediately told her how absolutely INCREDIBLE it was and she couldn’t have chosen a better location (not that I’m biased or anything) to showcase her style 🙂 Her dress popped off of the marble of the Capitol and looked absolutely gorgeous, especially with the sun & glow that we got during sunset!! It was supposed to be a steamy 90 degrees but we lucked out with one of those perfect summer nights! This shoot was definitely one of my favorite senior sessions and definitely a favorite from the Capitol, and I’ve been here A LOT!!

Tanvi is so incredibly fun to be around and this comes from someone who only spent an hour with her during her portraits! She has the most beautiful and contagious smile and laugh, you’ll see it in the pictures and I couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear, and freaking out over how beautiful her portraits were! She was so relaxed throughout the whole thing and had such a bright yet calm personality that really shows in her pictures. It’s crazy because her mom actually knows my mom through our Indian community of people since my mom is choreographing a dance for Tanvi’s little brother! Connections like that always remind me of what a small world it is! She spent a majority of her life studying Japanese through school and loves being able to stay in touch with the culture which so reminds me of my best friend! Pair that with a love of sushi, and of course we were going to get along hahaha! She described her style as being pretty casual and cute with jewel tones and blush as an accent and I think her prom dress was a super dressed up version of her normal style!

This girl is going on to do BIG things at Virginia Tech and we actually had her shoot the NIGHT before went off to start her first day at VT!! I’m so thankful and honored that despite all the packing she had to be doing before heading off the next day, she was so present and in the moment during the ENTIRE time with me 🙂 I can’t wait to cheer her on as she studies CS at Virginia Tech! Tanvi, thank you so much for letting me capture your senior portraits, they were simply EPIC!! You’re such a sweet soul and you should be SO proud of everything you’ve accomplished so far in high school and beyond! I know your hard work and smile is going to take you places in the future! I hope to see you in your cap & gown four years down the road beaming with that same smile!

Two Friday Fun posts in a row? Oh my…well I actually decided to take a break for this week, partially because of Fourth of July! My aunt, uncle and their one year old baby boy came for a couple of days and I spent so much time playing with him!! It was such a nice break from the past couple of crazy weeks. And just before I knew it Tuesday turned into Thursday night and this week just flew by!! So no, I didn’t hit my goal of blogging three times this week, but I’m ok with it! Here’s still a recap of some parts over the past week and a quick look at what’s to come!

-My aunt’s baby was sooo stinking cute!!! I spent about five days playing with him and getting to know him, it was amazing 🙂 He was so full of energy, crawled all over the place faster than I could really keep up with sometimes! His favorite things to do included climbing our stairs (his house doesn’t have any so he was fascinated with ours), making things spin (the fidget spinner was a great hit), making noises with objects (I made a game of throwing a seashell in a bowl), and playing roll catch (I’m totally making that up) with a ball! He definitely could recognize who I was a couple of days in and we became great friends 🙂

-On the flip side, I didn’t really leave the house except for getting dinner on Friday and Saturday night. A lot of Gilmore Girls was watched which was great but when I don’t leave my house in like a day or two, I get SUPER antsy. I don’t know what it is but I get restless if I don’t, which often leads to trips to Harris Teeter, Target or the mall which can be dangerous

-Such a dangerous trip to the mall was made on Wednesday. I went to buy a new candle and came back with an additional lipstick, two dresses, and a top……so there goes my shopping for July! But I regret nothing, they were all great finds and things I will definitely be making use of

-I miss my brother who’s in Austin, TX for a school club project test run this week. I keep almost asking my parents where he is. It’s safe to say it’s been a little quieter around here after the baby left and without him around

-The Fourth of July got super rained out and I didn’t end up celebrating at all!! And I really love the holiday because it’s during the summer, it’s the perfect excuse to get together with friends and family, eat all the food and I absolutely LOVE fireworks. I’m like a little kid that stares up in awe and gets really excited over them. So I made the next day my own little personal July Fourth. I celebrated with breakfast for lunch, iced coffee that turned out being better warm, making brownies and decorating them with strawberries & whip cream to make a flag, and watching the fireworks in Ashburn. I also sat for half an hour picking out blue sprinkles from a multicolored batch for the “stars” on my flag hahaha 🙂

-Thursday was a day for bookkeeping, backing up my hard drives, cleaning out my SD cards, recharging my camera battery, packing and planning for Charlottesville. I’ll be there this weekend celebrating being back with friends that I haven’t seen in so long and I am SO excited!! We’re planning on going to Pippin Hill (favorite winery) and Bold Rock (favorite brewery), eating at ALL the essential places on the Corner, celebrating a friend’s 22nd birthday and the soon-to-be moving out of another friend! It’s going to be such a fun weekend filled with sooo much food and a little booze 😉 If someone can muster up some sparklers, it’ll make it a week of celebrating the fourth! Here’s a couple of pictures of some of the girls I can’t wait to meet up with for dinner tonight!

I’ve known Rachel through the Society of Women Engineers at UVA for quite some time and it’s crazy to think that she’s all graduated now! We grabbed a few portraits around the side of the Chemical Engineering building in the Engineering School as well as by the Lawn before it started to rain!

June 2, 2016

I’ve known Rachel through the Society of Women Engineers at UVA for quite some time. She was the president this past year and I have such respect for how she handled everything with such ease. If you remember Apoorva, she was the president for the year before and I remember her telling me about how much of a time commitment and work it was to run the organization. SWE at UVA is the largest group for female engineers on Grounds. It focuses on three main goals: to provide academic & professional events for its members, to reach out to promote women in STEM fields at the elementary, middle and high school level as well as to encourage community within our engineering school by providing social activities for its members. This organization has been one of Rachel’s biggest commitments during her time at UVA while she was studying Chemical Engineering!

Naturally, we had to get some pictures near the Chemical Engineer sign on Engineers Way!

Red brick all around! We grabbed a few portraits around the side of the Chemical Engineering building as well as in front of Thornton Hall, the engineering school’s main building.

As we made our way to the Lawn the sky started to darken but we grabbed a bunch of quick portraits around Old Cabell, the Amphitheater breezeway, the Lawn chairs and more. By the end we were slipping out into the open for quick photos and then dashing back underneath the cover of West Range as it started to rain. But we got the grad cap toss and all!

Thanks Rachel for such a fun afternoon despite the rain and a special thank you for walking me back with your umbrella hahaha! I hope you know that you’ve been an amazing leader and really made an impact on UVA through your work for the Society of Women Engineers. I can’t wait to hear about your adventures in New York and I hope you come back to visit Hooville often!!

This was my favorite portrait session from my last week in Charlottesville. Naro & Shreya asked me to take their graduation portraits on the day of since their photographer couldn’t make it after Shreya had gotten her hair done. I’m glad that I had time to take their pictures and we actually got the best lighting as well! These two are so much fun to be around and we were laughing throughout the entire time.

They’re so easy going & comfortable around each other 🙂

We also took a bunch of individual portraits with grad caps, gowns and all. You can’t leave UVA without a couple of column pictures to remind you of the Lawn.

I love that the Rotunda is coming back to life in the background of all of these!

These ones above in the alley are definitely my favorite!

We ended around dusk in a garden I’d never been in before.

Naro & Shreya, thank you for letting me take your portraits. I hope you enjoyed your pictures and I’m glad you were able to get them taken on the day you had originally intended. Good luck to you both as you continue doing big things in the real world!

May 26, 2016

Jane, I hope you had a great time taking pictures and that you decided to get them taken for graduation! You’re officially #UVAGrad after walking the Lawn this weekend which is so incredibly exciting! I can’t wait to see what you do in the future and I hope you come back to visit 🙂

May 22, 2016

I met Jane through A.O.E. and she is honestly so warm, welcoming, and always smiling! We took her portraits around the Lawn as well as near West Range which was new for me and lots of fun! I loved incorporating her graduation stoles in the shoot as well. This girl is such a natural in front of the camera and I’m so happy with how all of these turned out!

Look at that laugh, it’s the cutest 🙂

Yay for a great grad cap toss!! And the ones with the stole have to be some of my favorite!

Radhika, you are gorgeous and I’m going to remember this day of taking pictures with you for so many years to come. I am going to miss you so very much over the next couple of years as you take on grad school but I hope you have these pictures as a reminder of your time at UVA.

May 20, 2016

Oh man, where to start? I met Radhika years ago through Indian classical dancing and continued to become really good friends with her through more dance but more importantly from being fellow engineers in both SWE and AOE at the University of Virginia. One of my first true experiences at UVA was when I went for a High School Visitation program and stayed with Radhika overnight to get a real feel of what college life was like living in a dorm. This girl has been the one that I’ve gone to for advice on everything college related and one of my role models in college. She’s always been the one in Wilsdorf Cafe that will greet me with the best hug and huge smile. You’ll see why her smile always brightened up my day.

Had to take some pictures near the Civil Engineering sign of course!

These are probably my favorite. She got up on the wall and just looked like she was on top of the world/E-way.

So cute 🙂

Radhika, you are gorgeous and I’m going to remember this day of taking pictures with you for so many years to come. I am going to miss you so very much over the next couple of years as you take on grad school but please come back and visit me and everyone else in our Holi dance group (I refuse to use the designated name).

May 20, 2016

Friday was a good day meeting up a high school friend who was here for Days on the Lawn & taking spontaneous portraits of Adi who was all dressed up for an interview!

April 22, 2016

I was so happy when Tejal told me that she was coming to visit UVA this past Friday. She was here for an admitted students Days on the Lawn where prospective students come to UVA for a day of panels, talks, tours, and to get a dose of a day at UVA. She asked to meet up and we got lunch at one of my favorite places on the Corner called Basil. I later ran into her, my brother, as well as our friend Adi near the Amphitheater and HAD to take pictures on this gorgeous spring day.

HHahahaha Sohum finally realized that he still had on Tejal’s name tag.

ANDD since Adi looked so dapper all dressed up for an interview we decided to take a couple of quick portraits so that he could get his quintessential “column picture” on the Lawn.

Don’t be fooled, he’s really just laughing at a really cute puppy off to the side.

This last one is my absolute favorite and his reaction to when I mentioned that his mom would LOVE these pictures. Well, I hope she does and I hope that your interview went well. Stay looking dapper & I hope you’re having the best first year at UVA. Tejal, if you’re reading this, CONGRATS FOR COMMITTING HERE!!! I hope that you’re next and that I can’t wait to take your “column picture” here at UVA next year!.

April 22, 2016

I got to meet up with Nneoma at the Colonnade Club on the Lawn a while ago to take some portraits in traditional clothing as a birthday gift!

April 22, 2016

I got to meet up with Nneoma a while ago to take some portraits in traditional clothing as a birthday gift! I think it’s awesome that she gets pictures taken each year and I know that one day she’s gonna look back at these and remember what it was like to be a third year at UVA. I was blown away when she changed and came into the Colonnade Room wearing her colorful, traditional clothing but it sure looks amazing in her pictures!

The Colonnade Club had a bunch of awesome rooms that we made use of as well as your traditional UVA brick to make use of.

Thanks for asking me to take these and I hope you had a great rest of your birthday eating downtown! Nneoma was such a model and worked super well with posing but I loved all the funny pictures that we took at the end of the session the most!

April 22, 2016

Sharaara, thanks for letting me take your pictures! I’ve always wanted to do team pictures  & you guys were a dream to work with. I know firsthand all the hard work you guys put in each week and I can’t wait to see how you guys do this spring!

January 4, 2016

My time at UVA has been pretty well defined by my decision first year to join a cultural dance team called UVA di Shaan that specializes in a kind of dance called Bhangra. There’s two other teams Indian dance teams on Grounds each with about 25 to 30 dancers. These dancers put in anywhere from 9 to 12 hours a week at UVA’s gyms learning choreography and formations for routines that tend to be anywhere from 6 to 8 minutes long. We call the AFC, Mem, North Grounds and Slaughter Rec Center our second homes. There are days that you have classes, a bunch of meetings, a fleeting dinner and then three hours of practice where you’re expected to put in the blood, sweat and tears. If it sounds like a lot of hard work, that’s because it is but at the end of the day you get to travel around the country and compete dances you spend hours perfecting. More than that, you make the best of friends through your team. You know each other best because you’ve seen them at their least glamorous (sweating in practice) and their best (if you need evidence of this, just look below). There’s nothing quite like being on a dance team!

Sharaara is UVA’s only female-fusion dance team and since it’s birth in 2002, this team has been competing all over the country in national inter-collegiate competitions. Last season these girls competed at UC Berkely, Boston, and Ohio State University and this season they’ll be making their way out to Georgia Tech, Boston again, and the University of Iowa. I can’t wait to see how they do this upcoming spring but until then enjoy some of their individual & team portraits we took last fall!

I’ve never had to photograph so many people at once but these girls definitely know how to work as a team both on stage and in front of the camera. That sounds so cheesy I know, but it’s true!

Sharaara, thanks for letting me take your pictures! I’ve always wanted to do team pictures  & you guys were a dream to work with. I know firsthand all the hard work you guys put in each week and I can’t wait to see how you guys do this spring!

If you haven’t seen any of their dances definitely go over to their Facebook page and check out some of these videos:

I was so honored that Grace came to me for portraits and I was even happier when her friend and roommate Brianna was able to join. It’s easy to tell how well these two girls get along!

December 31, 2015

Last year I decided to rush an engineering sorority called A.O.E. here at UVA. Those who know me were pretty surprised about my decision since I don’t exactly fit your stereotype of a sorority girl. However, the reason I followed through with rush continues to be the reason why I love A.O.E. today and that’s due to the fact that I got to meet and connect with some pretty amazing girls who were able to share my triumphs and struggles of being a female engineer at UVA. Grace is one of those girls that handles everything from her academics to extracurricular  activities, well with a certain kind of grace that’s hard to describe.

I was so honored that she came to me for portraits and I was even happier when her friend and roommate Brianna was able to join. It’s easy to tell how well these two girls get along. I loved how well these two’s outfits matched each others!

The lighting at the McIntire patio was perfect!

These two know how to have fun and I’m so glad they were down to play around in the leaves despite the students walking by right behind me. We also made sure to get the Rotunda in the back of their pictures despite its current scaffolded state.

Thanks for asking me to take these! I hope you two have a fantastic rest of your fourth year and that these pictures capture the spirit of your last year here at UVA!
