If you’ve been in business for a while now, chances are you have some of your brand basics down including things like your mission statement, your core values, your unique value proposition, brand descriptors, and maybe even content buckets for your marketing content that aligns with your brand.
But have you thought about your work culture?
This is something that I’ve been thinking a lot about lately and I’ve been trying to figure out what type of work culture do I want to set. Sure we might be solopreneurs for the most part as creative entrepreneurs. We work from home, in our cozy blankets, our PJs sometimes (#noshame), and talk business strategy with our furry friends, defying the 9-5 in our own ways. . .
But I DO think it’s just as important for us to establish a work culture within our small business as it is to look for a really healthy one when you’re finding a job!
Work culture is everything. And usually it’s usually established by the top-level executives.
A.k.a. YOU in your small business.
You ARE the boss, the CEO – the one carrying the torch for creating a fun, positive, encouraging atmosphere for your employees – a.k.a. ALSO you.
I think we so easily fall into the trap of holding ourselves to perfection, meeting crazy deadlines, and basically working our butts off. . . All for a SUPER crazy, ungrateful demanding boss that is just plain ol’ mean sometimes. . .
Except that boss is US. And sometimes we don’t even realize it.
So let’s take the reigns back – today, I want you to intentionally think through:
“What type of work culture do I WANT to have within my business?”
“What type of work culture do I GET to have within my business?”
You set the tone for it & can shift that culture any time that you like!
This week’s podcast episode is all about setting your own work culture in your business! I had the incredible Hope Taylor on and I got to chat with her all about about boundaries in business, mental health, and our identities as creative entrepreneurs.
Memorable Moments & Quotes from today’s episode:
02:25 “It was like my identity got swept up in my brand and my professionalism for a few years, and that’s just kind of an element of growing a business at a young age that a lot of people don’t hear me talk about.”
03:39 “The biggest thing that was life-giving to me was giving myself permission to know that I can still be authentic on social media, while remaining a professional and having a professional brand that I’m proud of.”
09:33 “If you’re not being really intentional about refilling that from your business and strategy perspective, you’re going to lose your creativity, you’re going to lose your drive, and you’re going to lose your inventiveness and entrepreneurship.”
15:11 “The biggest thing I would change is just the assumption that there’s only one right way to scale in the photography business because there’s not. There’s so many ways to scale a photography business, an entrepreneurship in a service-based industry that isn’t just creating online courses.”
15:57 “There isn’t one cookie cutter way to do it — lean into what you feel passionate about and know that if you’re passionate about it that’s all it takes to make it successful, whether other people are doing it or not.”
