Today is my 4th business birthday. This business has grown a lot over the past four years and I know that I have too. More so than a learning & becoming of something new, I’ve found myself coming home to who I truly feel like I am in part due to running my business. Entrepreneurship really forces you to be creative, clarify, refine, repeat, become consistent and innovate all at the same time over and over and over again.
And so it feels like I’m coming home with this announcement – which will actually be one of many throughout this year of change!
It was never my intention to ever start a podcast and here’s why. Maybe you can relate but every time I’ve heard my voice played back over an audio recording, I cringe. It took me YEARS to realize that this is actually a bit of a phenomenon, and that other people feel the same way too.
As someone who grew up classically shy and naturally introverted, I’ve never been a fan of public speaking either. I grew up performing dance and piano in front of crowds of hundreds and at some points thousands, but give me a microphone and my ears will turn red, my heart will start to pound and I need some notes to go off of otherwise I will start to nervous ramble or lose my train of thought completely.
So when I decided to start my YouTube channel – filming videos consistently and fumbling over words was tough. Over time, as with anything else, practice did help and I started to get the hang of it some more but I realized that even after sticking with it over a few months, I didn’t feel like I was in my element or in my flow.
I also have SO much knowledge that I want to share about in ways that I can’t quite summarize into just a 5-10 minute YouTube video that I drafted up beforehand. After (unsuccessfully) attempting to pitch myself to numerous podcasts for numerous months and feeling a lack of a certain topic that I felt uniquely called to share about, it clicked for me.
What if I interviewed OTHER business owners on the real and raw behind the scenes of their businesses instead? My number one wish as I was first starting up my business had always been to be able to peer behind the “social media” curtain to see what life was really like – with the good the bad and the in-between – running their photography business. It was the same reason why I created my Signature Behind the Business Photography Course.
This is just another avenue of bringing these conversations and glimmers of real life to other photographers that I’m sure are craving the same sense of authenticity and imperfection that I still do to this day from the leaders in an industry that sometimes lends itself to perfection and comparison.
You know those late-night chats you have at in-person retreats and conferences after the “day” is done, the ones that really get to the heart of the matter? The ones where you are open & honest about what’s happening behind the perfectly curated grid? Those are the conversations we’d love to bring to our show!
Each week on Behind the Business Podcast, I ask our guests to show up as they would in a real life, behind the scenes day of their business! Leggings, yoga pants, top knots & coffee welcome here! Podcast guests are encouraged to share what the reality is like within their business, the tough times with the good. Awkward pauses, umms, imperfection and real-life all in 20-30 minute candid weekly conversations.
Feel free to listen in as you are – whether you’re on the way to a shoot, posted up at your dining table eating takeout in PJs, while pulling a late night editing marathon, or folding the umpteenth piece of laundry. I hope these episodes are relatable and encourage you that if those who have gone before you have “made it” and found “success” imperfectly, there’s more than enough room at their table for you to find the same.
I hope the Behind the Business Podcast helps you overcome the perception of perfection & ditch comparison daily, one candid chat at a time!
If you find yourself nodding along during an interview, I’d love to hear your thoughts in a comment and would so appreciate you sharing the episode with your friends!
This week’s episode takes you behind the scenes of my very own business! I thought it’d be fun to share 10 things you might not know about me as the person BEHIND the Manali Photography business! I hope it’s a fun one to tune into and encourages you to share more about something your audience might not know about you!
Cheers to showing up imperfectly & becoming confident and successful behind your business!
